Back to Full Blog

Okay, guys and gals.  I've declared war on my house.  I've decided that we have accumulated w-a-a-a-a-a-y too much stuff and am ready to get this place back into a managable state.

I need ideas on organizing!  Or any other household hints or habits that might help.  I have a few of my own, but I know you guys have ideas and tricks that are all your own that you never even thought might be helpful to anybody else.

Well, here's the place to share em!!!  I need all the ammo I can get before I go into battle, so please share ASAP, okay?  No little detail is too trivial, okay?

I NEED HELP!!!!!

Hi Pup! Maybe you could just start "room by room" (so it doesn't seem so overwhelming) and go thru stuff. For me, I make the rule of if I haven't worn it in a year, or haven't started the project in a year, or haven't implemented that "must have" nick-nack into my decor in a year.... I'm probably not going to... and it goes into the Salvation Army donation heap or for a yard sale. That's a good start with scaling down, anyway. :) -Six

That is good advice from Six Pup. I tend to get overwhelmed when facing a larger than life task if I look at the big picture, so I divided it up into managable and do able chunks. ebay would be a great place for all those things that you no longer use or want, and if you don't have the time for such an endeavor there are places now where you can drop your things off and they will handle all the work in exchange for a small commission.

According to experts if you have not used it or worn it in the past year...chances are you won't. I just finished with spring cleaning myself: I had 1 box for throw away stuff, 1 box for give away or donate stuff and 1 box for I don't know if I can part with it right now stuff.Having a yard sale is always an option if you have the time.

I have struggled for years with giving things away. My fear is that as soon as I do I will need it, or "one of these days this will be worth a lot of money" .

Also, www.organizedhome.com is a fantastic site with lots of advice and tips. If all else fails, hire someone to do it for you, then retire to that lovely porch you posted pictures of with Governor Ice, put on some music, light some candles, have a drink and let the good times roll!

I use stoage bins for almost everything....Right now though I have 3 big boxes of junk to go through and get rid of ,,,,I took some old bathroom cabinets and painted them and put solid counter top on them for office storage of equipment and supplies...I love these things a lot...Colo

OH boy, I am an organizational idiot.
My advice is to not get too overwhelmed and just do one room at a time.
Take your time and do it for a week.
Like today I will do all of my kitchen cabinets and drawers.
Let us know how you are doing, maybe I will join ya!

I live with a real simple rule.......
Pick it up once that's ok put it away.
Pick it twice, if it's mine put it away someone else's make them put it away.
Pick it up a third time doesn't matter who's it is there won't be a fourth pick up,
it's gone.

My Grandma always said you get it out you put it away....
if you don't have time to put it away then you don't have time to get it out.

Sweetness ...
Organized is my middle name ...
First, "google" california closets ... even if you can't afford them, you can look at them and get GOOD ideas!
I have been simplifying my life ... If I have something I literally haven't touched in a year, I probably don't need it ...
Donate it, gift it, EBay it or THROW IT OUT!
Hurts at first but it is so worth it.
Same with clothes ... If you haven't worn it in a year, let it go!
I read an article that said combine you collections and choose 5-6 of your favorites and get rid of the rest ...
Files ... If you haven't looked in it in a year, do you really need it? NOPE!
If you do each closet, each cupboard, each drawer ... with the goal of having room enough to add something at a later time, you will create ROOM to grow ... and the funny thing is, you are less likely to fill it up because you like having the room!
Weird how that works, huh?
